Your Toyota Lease-End Options

Most Toyota leases are financed through Toyota Financial Services (TFS). When the lease ends, you’ll usually pick one of four paths. You can stop by and talk through them with our team before you decide.

1. Trade Up to a New Toyota

Turn in your current lease and drive home a new RAV4, Camry, Tacoma, Highlander, or another Toyota. TFS typically waives the disposition fee when you lease or finance your next new or Toyota Certified vehicle through TFS within 30 days of your return.

2. Buy Your Leased Toyota

You already know how the vehicle has been driven and maintained. Buying it out avoids mileage and wear charges, and our finance team can help you arrange financing for the purchase price.

3. Sell Us Your Leased Toyota

Used Toyota values are strong, and your vehicle may be worth more than your lease buyout. If it is, that equity could go toward your next vehicle. Get an offer and we’ll show you the numbers.

4. Return It and Walk Away

If you’re done with the vehicle, return it to Ron Tonkin Toyota. We accept Toyota Financial Services lease returns no matter which dealer you leased from. We’ll take care of the turn-in and the odometer paperwork.

How a Toyota Lease Return Works

  1. Start about 90 days out. Look up your maturity date, mileage allowance, and remaining payments in your TFS account or lease agreement.
  2. Schedule a courtesy pre-inspection. TFS offers a free pre-inspection that you can schedule within about 60 days of your return. It lists any estimated excess wear-and-use charges, so you have time to fix things before you turn the vehicle in.
  3. Compare your options. Get your buyout amount from TFS and an offer from us on what the vehicle is worth, and look at what your next Toyota would cost. Then choose.
  4. Gather your items. Bring all keys and remotes, the owner’s manual, the spare tire and tool kit, and any original equipment such as floor mats or cargo covers.
  5. Turn it in at Ron Tonkin Toyota. We’ll complete the final inspection, you’ll sign the odometer disclosure statement, and we’ll give you a copy for your records.
  6. Watch for your final invoice. TFS mails a final statement after the return. It covers any excess mileage, wear-and-use charges, or remaining fees. Cancel any automatic lease payments once everything is settled.

Tip: Take dated photos of the vehicle’s exterior, interior, wheels, and odometer on the day you return it. Keep them with your odometer statement in case you have a question about the final invoice.

Excess Wear and Use: What Toyota Looks For

Normal wear is expected. TFS guidelines generally flag items like these as excess wear:

  • Dents, scratches, cuts, tears, burns, or stains larger than a credit card
  • Cracked, chipped, or pitted windshields
  • Tires with exposed cords, sidewall damage, or tread below the minimum
  • Broken or missing lights, mirrors, wheel covers, or trim
  • Missing keys, remotes, or original equipment
  • Equipment that doesn’t work, or modifications that weren’t on the vehicle when it was new

If the pre-inspection finds tire, glass, or minor body issues, our Toyota service center can quote the repairs. That gives you a chance to compare the cost of fixing them with the estimated lease-end charge.

Lease Return vs. Buyout vs. Trade-In

Option Good fit if you… Keep in mind
Trade up to a new Toyota Want the latest models, safety tech, and a fresh warranty The disposition fee is typically waived when your next vehicle is financed or leased through TFS within 30 days
Buy out your lease Love your vehicle, are over your miles, or have some wear The buyout price is set in your lease contract. Taxes and fees apply
Sell your lease to us Your Toyota is worth more than the buyout Equity depends on current market value and your payoff amount
Return and walk away Don’t need a vehicle right now or plan to shop around A disposition fee, excess mileage, and wear charges may apply

Toyota Lease Return FAQs

Can I return my Toyota lease to a different Toyota dealer?

Yes, if your lease is through Toyota Financial Services (TFS). Ron Tonkin Toyota accepts TFS lease returns no matter where the vehicle was leased. That includes other Portland-area dealers, Washington dealers, and dealers out of state. You don’t have to return it to the original dealership. Leases through a bank or credit union follow that lender’s return rules. Call ahead so we can schedule a time.

Can I end my Toyota lease early?

Often, yes. Depending on your contract and how many payments are left, TFS may have early-return or pull-ahead options, especially if you’re leasing or financing another Toyota. We can review your account and current offers with you.

What is a Toyota lease disposition fee?

The disposition fee is a lease-end charge, listed in your lease agreement, that covers the cost of preparing the returned vehicle for resale. TFS typically waives it if you lease or finance your next new or Toyota Certified vehicle through TFS within 30 days, or if you’ve had three or more TFS contracts. Check your lease agreement for the exact terms.

What happens if I’m over my lease mileage?

Miles over your contract allowance are billed at the per-mile rate in your lease agreement. If you’re well over, buying the vehicle or trading it in may cost less than returning it and paying the mileage charges. We can help you compare.

Do I need an appointment to return my lease?

We recommend one. That way we can have the paperwork ready and finish the inspection while you’re here. Contact us or call (503) 749-7045 to schedule.

Does my leased Toyota have equity?

It might. If your vehicle’s current market value is higher than your lease buyout amount, the difference is equity that could go toward your next vehicle. Get an offer and we’ll show you the numbers.
